Time Warner (home of AOL) has given 72 percent to Democrats, while Google's PAC has given about $103,000 to Democrats and $72,000 to Republicans in the 2010 campaign cycle. Breaking a Promise on Surveillance
Posted by admin / Under Internet Economy
It is just a technical matter, the Obama administration says: We just need to make a slight change in a law to make clear that we have the right to see the names of anyones e-mail correspondents and their Web browsing history without the messy complication of asking a judge for permission. It is far more than a technical change. The administrations request, reported Thursday in The Washington Post, is an unnecessary and disappointing step backward toward more intrusive surveillance from a president who promised something very different during the 2008 campaign.

Leak City (Oliver North)
Posted by admin / Under Internet Economy
WASHINGTON In most administrations, "leaks" of classified information precipitate presidential ire. Nearly all such unauthorized disclosures are the consequence of disgruntled government employees deciding that a "leak" is the best way to stop some activity they have decided should not continue. To justify their unlawful actions, they call themselves "secret whistle-blowers." The so-called "mainstream media" love them. Most American presidents do not. That's what makes the current commander in chief's reactions to a whole series of "leaks" so unusual. President Barack Obama doesn't seem to be concerned at all. President Ronald Reagan was infuriated by the publication and broadcast...

The sleeping giant: Conservatives gaining force online
Posted by admin / Under Internet Economy
With the turn of a phrase, Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Bachmann seemed to sum up last weekends RightOnline conference, an annual gathering of conservative activists. The sleeping giant is awake, she declared . . . For the first time ever, conservative blogs hold the top two slots in Technorati.coms politics blog ranking, pushing The Huffington Post, the long-reigning champion, to the fifth slot. Conservative blogs also make up half of the top ten political blogs on the Web, while the distinctly liberal blogs only claim two spaces . . .

The Men of Journolist [Life as High School]

Somebody needs to say it. The Journolist scandal will not be finished until someone says it. Who let the dogs out? The website iowntheworld.com is posting pictures of the Men of Journolist, the listserv where journalists got together to hammer out talking points to help liberal politicians. The Journolist has been called corrupt. A disgrace. Something that will never be lived down. But its also the ugliest group of life forms this side of a National Geographic special. When do these orcs march on Helms Deep? Its childish to make fun of someones looks, I know. So Ill get to...

W.House proposal would grant FBI access to Internet activity records without court order 29 Jul 2010 The Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to compel companies to turn over records of an individual's Internet activity without a court order if agents deem the information relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation. White House proposal would ease FBI access to records of Internet activity

The Obama administration is seeking to make it easier for the FBI to compel companies to turn over records of an individual's Internet activity without a court order if agents deem the information relevant to a terrorism or intelligence investigation. The administration wants to add just four words -- "electronic communication transactional records" -- to a list of items that the law says the FBI may demand without a judge's approval. Government lawyers say this category of information includes the addresses to which an Internet user sends e-mail; the times and dates e-mail was sent and received; and possibly a...

Dingell To (FCC's) Genachowski: Abandon Title II Plan
Posted by admin / Under Internet Economy
Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) has counseled FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to "abandon" his effort to reclassify broadband under some Title II regs and told him to wait for Congress to weigh in, saying the chairman's defense of that plan was insufficient. That came in a letter to Genachowski Wednesday in response to the FCC Chairman's letter Monday, which was itself a response to Dingell's letter of last week about the fact that he had gotten no response to a letter he had sent two months ago. The key to that maze of correspondence was that Dingell said the chairman's response,...

Could Facebook Be the Next AOL?
Posted by admin / Under Internet Economy
Last week, Facebook announced that it had amassed 500 million users, a formable portion of the global Internet audience. But even as Mark Zuckerberg and company celebrates, others are busy trying to uproot Facebook's popularity by establishing a set of open standards to share Facebook-like features across the Internet. Just like open standards for e-mail and the Web broke users free from proprietary closed networks of the early 1990s, so too could a new set of standards allow people to share their thoughts, photos and comments across the Internet, regardless of what social networking services they use, argued Evan Prodromou,...
